As a special education teacher, I have worked with many students who struggled to learn reading. I’ve seen their disappointment and frustration mount as their peers quickly mastered the skills they found so difficult. I’ve watched their self-confidence decline as their poor reading abilities held them back in other subjects.
And despite my best efforts and using the latest innovations in “research-based curriculum,” I was often unable to help them effectively.
I knew there had to be a better way.
And I found it in Phono-Graphix, a method built on the concept that the sounds in words are represented by sound pictures, and that these sound pictures can be easily decoded.
Phono-Graphix teaches the skills every child needs to read and spell—segmenting, blending, and phoneme manipulation. It teaches the true nature of the English written code, then let’s the students apply the code themselves, treating children like the explorers they truly are. The system of error correction used in the method provides just the right amount of information to engage students in problem-solving and active learning.
There’s a lot of research that validates the effectiveness of Phono-Graphix. And as a teacher, I can tell you that when I started using it in my special ed classroom back in California, I was soon amazed to see my students gaining confidence and acquiring the skills necessary to read increasingly difficult texts.
Since moving to Buena Vista in Fall 2018, I’ve deepened my Phono-Graphix practice by tutoring special ed students and completing the rigorous Phono-Graphic certification program.
Teaching reading to students who find it challenging has become my passion. I love seeing my students grow in confidence and joy as they discover a whole new world of written words. Please give me a call or send me an email if you want to discuss how I can help your child learn the joy of reading.
My husband and I moved to Buena Vista in the fall of 2018, and we absolutely love its awesome beauty, kind people, and welcoming community. In my free time I love to hike the many trails we have right here in our backyard.
